Inspiration From Dr. Don Shalvey

on Thu, 05/17/2012 - 17:31

This past weekend I was in LA at USC for my graduation from the Master's program - Go Trojans! I wanted to share the inspiring Commencement speech from alumni Dr. Don Shalvey. He formed the first charter school in California, and is currently overseeing the Bill and Melinda Gates Education Foundation. Enjoy!

Thoughts on English Morphology

on Tue, 04/24/2012 - 16:08

Thoughts on English Morphology and Ben Zimmer's interview with Carl Zimmer on bloggingheads.tv (see video below).

I am very interested in English morphology and looking at the origin of words, the blending of new words, and how new words are created. Ben Zimmer explains in the video bloggingheadstv that when lexicographers want to know the origin of words, they first go to the Oxford dictionary, then they go back to where they first heard about the word, and then they work with that source and just keep backtracking.

A Short Walk Through A Progression Of English

on Fri, 04/13/2012 - 00:40

I recently started using www.prezi.com for my presentations in the MAT program @USC, and wow....powerpoint is seriously a thing of the past. I mean, prezi makes powerpoint look like it stepped out from under the 80s. In prezi you can make your presentation literally zoom from idea to idea, and long gone are slides filled with too much information.  Additionally - it is so easy to organically add information to your presentation...even up to the last minute.

Tesol.me - A Small Voice in the Global Conversation

on Fri, 04/06/2012 - 03:06

Hello world!  TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of another Language) is my teaching area of choice because I enjoy connecting with people from all cultures and I love the English language.

I am currently pursuing my Master's in Teaching ESL online from the University of Southern California otherwise known as the MAT@USC program, Go Trojans!  You can also see my blog posts on the official MAT blog. My posts on this blog will reflect the content I am synthesizing in my courses, content I am teaching in my classes, and tips for TESOL teachers.
